Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Princess Royal Hospital

Rehabilitation Programme
We accept patients with varying heart conditions including

  • Post heart attack
  • Stable angina
  • Post stenting
  • Cardiac surgery
  • Stable heart failure
  • Patients with ICD

Patients are either seen on Balcombe ward or the majority are referred by the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, London Hospitals, GP referral or self-referral.
We offer telephone support and a 6 week course of exercise & health education. Prior to commencing the course patients are offered an assessment with the Cardiac Nurses & physiotherapist. This includes a medication review, pulse & blood pressure check and an opportunity to ask questions about your cardiac condition. Patients are seen individually by our physiotherapist and then undertake a shuttle walk test to enable us to establish an individual target heart rate for the exercise programme.
Following assessment you will be invited to attend the exercise classes on Friday mornings and Health Education Sessions on alternate Wednesday mornings. These sessions include:

  • Exercise
  • Stress management & relaxation
  • Resuming sex
  • How the heart works
  • Risk factors
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Medicines
  • Healthy Eating

The talks are presented by a multidisciplinary team. We can also refer you individually to smoking cessation, dietician and a psychologist if you need any further support.
At the end of each exercise class our Occupational therapist leads a short session in relaxation.
Following the programme we can refer you on to exercise programmes in the community run by cardiac trained fitness instructors.
