Cardiac Catheter Laboratories

The Cardiac Catheter Laboratories (Cath Labs) opened in June 1999 with two purpose built G.E. Cath Labs. We started with just 2 cardiac interventional cardiologists performing coronary angiograms, basic angioplasty and 1 pacing and electrophsyologist implanting early permanent pacemakers and preforming electrophysiology studies. Now we are one of the leading centres within the UK and have a growing International reputation.
The cath labs are now made up of 12 Cardiologists (Interventional, Electrical and Imaging); three purpose built labs, a dedicated procedure room for imaging and minor cases and a state of the art hybrid theatre that doubles as a cardiac and vascular theatre.
We are one of the largest cath lab centres in the UK, and have a reputation worldwide for clinical, teaching and research excellence. The cardiac catheter laboratory is part of a tertiary centre, which incorporates an extensive referral area, offering a 24 hour primary myocardial infarction service.
We admit patients through our specifically designed day case unit where patients come in from home, have their procedure and go home late the same day. Some patients may stay overnight on one of our cardiac wards if necessary. The importance to the department is the patient and we constantly strive to develop the care we provide to with safety checklists, protocols and integrated care pathways to ensure all treatment is delivered to the highest of expectations. Our patients also come from one of the three cardiology wards, CCU/L6a, Lewes and Albion wards. We can also receive patients from other wards and through A+E as emergencies. Sometimes patients who require our specialist treatment come from other hospitals in the south east.

There are many teams that care for the patients prior to and during their care but we also believe it is vital for some cardiac patients to have a follow up. This is provided by our wonderful cardiac rehabilitation team who try and see all patients undergoing a interventional procedures before they are discharged. They provide fitness sessions and educational classes as well as following up patients at home with telephone calls to make sure that they are getting the support and care they need.
The cardiac catheter labs are run by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of enthusiastic and self-motivated specialist nurses, doctors, physiologists and radiographers that provide high quality cardiology care. The range of procedures has changed to incorporate cutting edge technology and advanced techniques for invasive and non-invasive procedures including:

percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty
rotablation,
patent foramen ovale,
atroventricular septal defect,
left atrial appendage occlusions
transluminal aortic valve implantation and
chronic total occlusion procedures

We also have a ground breaking electrophysiology service including 3D mapping systems, radiofrequency and cryo ablations and innovative ventricular tachycardia ablations. We also offer pacemaker, defibrillator, injectable internal loop recorder implants and trans-oesophageal echocardiograms.
The development of such procedures comes with good links to the research and development team that keeps us pushing the expansion of the service we can provide and to which patients we can deliver it to. We have an international reputation for our Structural Heart Programme where we have been involved with the advance of growing technologies around the world.
Using our close links with other departments in the hospital to provide a holistic service we are able to continue to offer educational opportunities to staff and provide an excellent environment to push and better themselves and their care. We are also supported by local charity Sussex Heart Charity to bring optimal care to our service users.
